Mail.dat is the industry database standard for efficient
communication among mail list processors, manufacturers, and transportation
and delivery agents, including the Postal Service. It is the new
route to electronic mail verification and acceptance as well as
postage calculation and transportation planning.
Preparing names and addresses for a mailing is only part of the
job of the mailing list manager. With the list must come the make-up
of the mailing, the consolidations involved used for production
and transportation planning, and the detail used for postage calculation,
verification, and acceptance.
Developed by IDEAlliance's Mail.dat Working Group, Mail.dat is used by numerous Postal industry vendors,
involved in generating, manufacturing, and distributing mail projects,
to readily communicate mail-related data with each other. Replacing
the previously used Third Class Production Container Summary and
its successor The Enhanced Production Container Summary, Mail.dat
permits dynamic production revision for almost any mailing instance,
and provides the finer level of detail necessary to satisfy Postal
reporting requirements as it eliminates the need for hard-copy documentation.
This Mail.dat standard is designed to stand the test of time; with
it, any future opportunity, production need, or Postal system changes
should be accommodated with ease.
It's easy to move to Mail.dat. If you are the mail owner (publisher,
catalogue, direct marketer, etc.) or the printer-mailer/mail house,
get a copy of the Mail.dat specification from IDEAlliance. Then
you can tell your list house or presort producer to generate Mail.dat.
You'll also need a User License Code as well, available from IDEAlliance.

Mail.dat Licensed Users' names will be kept on file for immediate
notification of any announcements, clarifications, revisions or
other important information related to Mail.dat.
